If you liked that book....keep reading!

Do you know a student who struggles to land on a book choice?  Or who starts a book and just can't make it all the way through?  Or maybe one who only wants to read books "just like" the one that they just finished?

Try suggesting some of these great series written for middle school readers--you can't read just one:

The Alex Rider Series by Anthony Horowitz

The main character (Alex) is a 14-year-old boy whose life is abruptly thrown into chaos as he becomes a spy--really!  One of my daughters loved and read every book in sequence.

From Goodreads:  "They told him his uncle died in an accident. He wasn't wearing his seatbelt, they said. But when fourteen-year-old Alex finds his uncle's windshield riddled with bullet holes, he knows it was no accident. What he doesn't know yet is that his uncle was killed while on a top-secret mission. But he is about to, and once he does, there is no turning back. Finding himself in the middle of terrorists, Alex must outsmart the people who want him dead. The government has given him the technology, but only he can provide the courage."

The Gallagher Girls Series by Ally Carter

Speaking of spies....this series of cleverly titled books are all about teenage girls who are secretly being trained in espionage!  I personally read this whole series in a few summer weeks by the pool--fun reads that gradually become more serious as the characters age through high school.

From Goodreads:   "The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women is a fairly typical all-girls school—that is, if every school teaches advanced martial arts in PE, chemistry always consists of the latest in chemical warfare, and everyone breaks CIA codes for extra credit in computer class. So in truth, while the Gallagher Academy might say it’s a school for geniuses what they really mean is spies."

The Animal Healer Series by Lauren St. John

From Goodreads:  "When Martine’s home in England burns down, killing her parents, she must go to South Africa to live on a wildlife game preserve, called Sawubona, with the grandmother she didn’t know she had. Almost as soon as she arrives, Martine hears stories about a white giraffe living in the preserve. But her grandmother and others working at Sawubona insist that the giraffe is just a myth. Martine is not so sure, until one stormy night when she looks out her window and locks eyes with Jemmy, a young silvery-white giraffe. "

The Crossover Series by Kwame Alexander

Attention, sports fans!  Athletes (and couch athletes) will enjoy this collection of books about basketball and soccer.

From Goodreads:  "With a bolt of lightning on my kicks . . .The court is SIZZLING. My sweat is DRIZZLING. Stop all that quivering. Cuz tonight I'm delivering," announces dread-locked, 12-year old Josh Bell. He and his twin brother Jordan are awesome on the court. But Josh has more than basketball in his blood, he's got mad beats, too, that tell his family's story in verse, in this fast and furious middle grade novel of family and brotherhood."

So many books, so little space!

*I have to mention Gordon Korman's series as options for readers who "don't like long books."  Check out the On the Run, Dive, Everest, Island, and Titanic series--most are 3 shorter length but higher suspense books!

*The Selection series by Kiera Cass is a mashup of The Bachelor TV show and Hunger Games--hard to imagine but you'll see what I mean!

*And so many more!

Happy Reading!
